Bundi Festival Rajastan

Bundi festival or the Bundi Utsav is one of the most anticipated festivals in Rajasthan, India. This three-day Utsav attracts tourists from all over the world every year in the Kartik Month of the Hindu calendar. As an excellent example of Rajasthani culture, the Bundi festival sees all sorts of local communities gathered together in vibrant attire celebrating their folk art, music, dance, and tradition.

Various events and competitions are organised over these three days, ranging from handicrafts to musical events. These programmes are also well-known for providing a platform for the country’s rising stars to showcase their talents.

Here are some exciting events to attend at the Bundi festival.

The spectacular Shobha Yatra

The Shobha Yatra, also known as the Deepdan (lighting of lamps), is a sight you must see if you plan to attend the Bundi Festival. On the night of Kartik Purnima, thousands of men and women dressed in colourful traditional attire float diyas on the banks of the Chambal river and seek blessings for a good and prosperous year ahead. The banks of the Chambal river glimmer like stars in the night sky following the deepdan. This practice connotes the removal of darkness and the victory of light.

Unconventional sports events

Sports activities are often held at the Bundi festival. While one may think of Kabaddi, horse riding, or camel races as sports, the people of Bundi like to take it a step further. Rajasthan is known for its colourful turbans, long moustaches, and unconventional sports such as turban-tying contests, moustache competitions, and bridal contests are a common sight.

Intricate handicrafts and folk art

People from around the world come to the Bundi festival for the arts and handicrafts display. The local handicraftsman and artisans set up stores at the festival and sell jewellery, pottery, handloom and other artefacts.

Vibrant live performances

Many dance and music performances take place at the Bundi festival. The performers dress in colourful traditional Rajasthani dresses and dance to folk music. One of the most popular dances seen here is Ghoomar. It is performed by veiled women who don a ghagra, a flowy skirt and twirl in large circles.

The blend of talent, culture, and spirituality makes the Bundi festival this special. The variety of celebrations makes it an immersive cultural experience and captures the ethnic essence of Rajasthan. Therefore, to experience Rajasthan’s cultural glory, you must stop by and see the Bundi Festival. If you plan to take a trip to Rajasthan, make sure you add the Bundi festival to your itinerary.
